And finally… knuckleheads

A former boxing champion has been spared jail for taking part in an illegal bare-knuckle fight - and told by the judge to join a boxing club.

Anthony Kelly, 40, knocked out Alan Clohessy, 29, in an organised fight which was filmed and uploaded to YouTube and Facebook.

The pair pleaded guilty to affray in Ennis Circuit Court and have been slapped with a two-month suspended sentence and a three-month suspended sentence respectively, the Irish Examiner reports.

Addressing Mr Kelly, a former Munster boxing champion, Judge Gerald Keys said: “If you want to get into combat in the future, why not join a boxing club - which you were a member of at some stage?”

Condemning the pair’s “dangerous” bare-knuckle fight, he added: “I can’t understand why parties couldn’t wear boxing gloves.”
