And finally… kart blanche

A prison governor has apologised after allowing prisoners to take part in a go-karting contest.

Inmates and guards at Fresnes Prison, the second-largest prison in France, took part in go-karting, tug-of-war and other events inspired by a TV game show, euronews reports.

Video footage from the event in the prison grounds emerged on social media and led to a political row after being condemned by right-wing politicians.

France’s justice minister, Éric Dupond-Moretti, said his department had approved a proposed “sporting contest” but was unaware it would involve go-karting.

According to the BBC, new guidelines will be issued to prisons to clarify what types of recreational and rehabilitative events are allowed.
