And finally... jumping through hoops

A teenage boy whose sex was mistakenly recorded on his birth certificate as female has been told he can only join girls’ sports teams at his US school.

The Laker family in Mesa, Arizona told ABC15 that their 14-year-old son was misidentified as female on his birth certificate as a result of a “clerical error”.

The mistake has scuppered the boy’s hopes of joining his school’s basketball team due to strict rules introduced amid Donald Trump’s war on “gender ideology extremism”.

An executive order issued by the US president in February declared that it is now the “policy of the United States to oppose male competitive participation in women’s sports more broadly, as a matter of safety, fairness, dignity, and truth”.

However, in the Laker family’s case, their son can now only compete with girls.

A corrected birth certificate was issued after the family submitted documents including a sworn affidavit and the results of a medical exam.

The school has not accepted the corrected document and maintains that he may only join girls’ or co-educational sports teams.

School officials have suggested that they could change their position if the family commissions a “chromosome analysis” at the cost of around $1,500 (around €1,290 or £1,120).

The boy’s parents have said he will try out for the girls’ basketball team if the school’s position does not change.
