And finally… judges rule self-abuse is no crime

The Italian Supreme Court has ruled that public masturbation is not a crime – even if it is done so with the aim of being seen by others.

La Corte di Cassazione made the ruling in a case involving a 69-year-old-man who was performing an autoerotic act in the city of Catania.

He was arrested after being caught at the University of Catania doing the deed.

La Repubblica reports that he was sentenced to three months in jail and fined by the Court of Appeal.

However, judges in the Supreme Court have ruled that recent reforms by the government mean “the act is not included in the law as a crime”.

As such, the criminal aspects of performing obscene acts in public have been eliminated.

The case has been remitted to the Prefect of Catania. The Supreme Court ruled the man must be fined between €5,000 and €30,000.

Last year, the government decriminalised the offence of lurking in order to be seen masturbating.
