Brian Murphy told police that he brought his dog Diesel into his bedroom after a long walk before leaving the room.

As soon as he left, he heard a bang - which he says was probably the sound of Diesel jumping on his night stand and setting off his gun.

The bullet hit Mr Murphy’s girlfriend in the leg.

Her condition is not life-threatening and police in Jacksonville, Florida have not indicated whether any charges will be filed.
