And finally… Dutch courage

Inebriated tourists on ‘beer bikes’ will plague Amsterdam no more after a court ruled that the contraptions be banned.

The vehicles are a popular way for groups including stag parties to travel around the Dutch capital while drinking.

Critics, however, have said they are an example of the problem caused by mass tourism.

Amsterdam District Court stated that “the beer bicycle may be banned from the city centre to stop it from being a nuisance”.

“The combination of traffic disruptions, anti-social behaviour and the busy city centre justifies a ban.”

Patrons power the vehicle by peddling while they drink beer.

Some 6,000 residents last year petitioned the council to ban the beer bikes, describing them as a “terrible phenomenon.”

One resident said: “Our city has become a giant attraction park.”
