And finally… doors knocked

Thieves have made off with the irreplaceable doors of a sixteenth-century castle in Co Laois, the owners have announced.

David Butler, who owns Ballyadams Castle near Ballylinan, said the heavy wooden doors were noticed missing on Saturday.

The distinctive doors date back to the seventeenth or eighteenth century and must have required multiple people to shift.

Mr Butler said it was “the first time that something that big has gone”, despite minor incidents of vandalism over the years.

He called on the public to contact gardaí if they had any information.
