And finally… déjà vu

A police force belatedly discovered it had been burgled after finding some of its belongings during an unrelated search.

Officers searching an address in Auckland, New Zealand unexpectedly came across “a number of documents” which were meant to have been destroyed, as well as expired cannisters of pepper spray, 1 News reports.

A 41-year-old man has now been arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a restricted weapon, burglary, and possession of instruments for burglary – but the force itself may now get into trouble with the country’s privacy watchdog.

Superintendent Karyn Malthus said: “Police are in the early process of establishing exactly what documentation has been taken and who may be affected by the breach. Police are extremely disappointed that this has occurred.”

Auckland Police will work with New Zealand’s Privacy Commissioner in the investigation, she added.
