And finally… crime doesn’t pay

Lawmakers in the District of Columbia, USA have approved a bill to pay cash to people that city officials believe could become criminals.

The scheme is part of the “Neighborhood Engagement Achieves Results Amendment Act of 2016” (NEAR Act) which was approved at first reading yesterday.

It would see civil servants identify up to 200 people each year that are at risk of committing or becoming victims of violent crime.

Each of them would then be offered a stipend to take part in a life planning, trauma-informed therapy and mentorship programme.

Kenyan R. McDuffie, the council member who proposed the bill, said it would move potential criminals “away from the pitfalls of violent crime”.
