Salvatore Campo, president of the Sicilian Anti-Extortion Association (ASIA), has also been charged with embezzlement and fraud.

Police allege that Campo demanded illegal payments from his clients, victims of mafia extortion and loan sharks who he said he would help.

Campo has been put under house arrest, Italian news agency ANSA reports.
