Government nominates three to High, Circuit and District Court benches

The Government has announced the nomination of Garret Simons SC for appointment to the High Court, as well as solicitors James McCourt and John Hughes to the Circuit Court and District Court respectively.

The vacancy in the High Court arises from the retirement of Mr Justice Paul Butler today, while the Circuit Court and District Court vacancies arise from the retirement this summer of Judge Michael O’Shea and Judge James O’Connor.

Mr Simons was educated at Trinity College Dublin and the King’s Inns, called to the Bar in 1996 and called to the Inner Bar in 2007.

He practices primarily in public administration law with an emphasis on environment and planning law, as well as immigration law.

He is also the author of legal textbook Planning & Development Law and a member of the editorial board of the Irish Law Reports Monthly.

Mr McCourt was educated at University College Cork and the Law Society and enrolled as a solicitor in 1981.

He is a partner at O’Mara, Geraghty, McCourt Solicitors, an accredited mediator and a past president of the Law Society.
