First book ban in two decades under Censorship of Publications Act

The Censorship of Publications Board has prohibited the sale and distribution in Ireland of a book that depicts child rape.

The book, written by author Jean Martin and published by STAR Distributors Ltd, is the first to be prohibited outright since 1998.

A meeting of the Board on 1 March 2016 found that the book “is indecent or obscene” and agreed that it should be banned under section 6 of Censorship of Publications Act 1946.

Solicitor Wendy Lyon of KOD Lyons told Irish Legal News: “I have to wonder if a ban such as this even serves any purpose in the internet age. I’m sure the author is pleased with the publicity around it, though.”
