Director of Military Prosecutions appointed after year-long vacancy

A new Director of Military Prosecutions (DMP) has been appointed after over a year with nobody in the post.

The DMP’s primary function is to direct and supervise military prosecutions, effectively acting as the military equivalent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The previous DMP retired in November 2018 and a new appointment was not made until February 2020, the Irish Examiner reports.

The job had been advertised as ideal for someone with “a minimum of 10 years’ practice in the role of barrister or solicitor” as well as an “understanding and knowledge” of the work of the Defence Forces.

The name of the new appointee to the role has not been publicised.
