UCD launches new Master's scholarship in law

UCD Sutherland School of Law has launched a new Master’s scholarship in law memorialising the late Declan McCourt.

The scholarship has been established with a €1 million fund at UCD Foundation in honour of the UCD alumnus, well-known businessman and chairman of the Law School’s Development Council.

The fund has been supported by UCD alumni and friends of the university, including US industrialist and philanthropist Mr Mark Pigott KBE.

Applications are currently being welcomed from final-year law students at the law school who are recipients of the UCD Cothrom na Féinne scholarship and/or the SUSI grant, and who have achieved an upper second-class honours average grade to date.

The awardee will receive the equivalent of the EU tuition fees of their one-year masters programme up to the value of €25,000.

Professor Laurent Pech, dean of law and head of UCD Sutherland School of Law, said: “The establishment of the Declan McCourt Masters Scholarship in Law creates a wonderful opportunity for UCD law students who wish to pursue a post-graduate degree but who may not be in a position to do so because of the financial commitment.

“I would encourage all eligible students interested in continuing their studies at the law school to apply.”

He added: “The scholarship celebrates Declan McCourt and his leadership at UCD as well as his tireless commitment to Ireland.

“His enthusiasm, focus and determination for education and the UCD Sutherland School of Law will continue to enrich future generations of law students.

“Thank you to the donors, many of whom were friends of Declan, who have generously supported the creation of the scholarship programme.”

More information about the scholarship programme and the application process can be found on the UCD website. The deadline for applications is 31 May 2025.
